A Good Guy with a Gun

The recent violent tragedy that involves the massacre of 20 school children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in a quiet town of Newtown, Connecticut has sparked a new national debate over tightening gun laws and tougher restrictions on guns. But the National Rifle Association (NRA) has a different stands and its executive vice president said, “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” In other words, the NRA wants to have armed security officers at all schools but was openly mocked by school administrators, law enforcement officials and politicians.

Many believe that having armed security personnel in the schools would not make children safer. And 52% of Americans right now favors in major gun restrictions, which is now much higher than the survey taken after the shooting inside a movie theater in Colorado. The NRA further says that limiting access to guns is not the answer and guns should not be blamed of the recent rush of mass shootings rather than the violent video games. NRA pointed out also, “why is the idea of a gun good when it’s used to protect the president of the US or the police, but bad when it’s used to protect the children in schools?”

They may have some salient points in the latter parts but there is no simple, single solution in this complex issue that surrounds school safety. It is all up to the experts who they think are the solutions in mitigating the loss of lives in the future because the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School, there were two armed law enforcement officers at the campus yet 15 people are dead.
